OK. Was the hue of the head of this bird a little green? I hate to expose myself as a water bird geek but I've gotta go "common merganser" if their heads were a bit green. otherwise I have to guess not Cali native. I gotta be honest. I had to consult the book.
OK. There was no hue of any kind. The head was pitch black. Go back to your field guide.
